Regularly checking in with your primary care physician is one of the best ways to live a happy, healthy life now and as you grow older.
"Primary care providers are the best opportunity to create lifelong relationships with a doctor as we treat newborns to the end of life," said Dr. Roberto Cardarelli, chair of UK Family & Community Medicine.
In honor of Primary Care Week, here are five reasons why primary care physicians are so important to your health.
1. They do more than just a yearly check-up.
Sure, you go to your primary care physician for an annual physical, but they can also provide maternity care, treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as some injuries, mental health services and even minor surgeries.
2. They know your healthy history.
Because these doctors follow your care throughout your life, they learn the ins and outs your medical history, which allows them to offer you holistic and personalized care.
3. You become more comfortable sharing your health issues and concerns.
As you get to know your doctor better over time, you'll feel more comfortable sharing your health history and asking questions you're too embarrassed to ask anyone else.
4. You'll stay healthier.
Primary care providers are able to offer preventive care, including mammograms and colon cancer screenings, which can help catch any health issues before they become serious. Your doctor can also help manage any chronic conditions you may have, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, so that you can lead the best life possible.
5. They can refer you to specialists when needed.
Say your doctor does notice something abnormal during a mammogram or colon cancer screening. They are able to coordinate with the right specialist to ensure that you get the follow-up care you need in an efficient manner.
