Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Kentucky. Also called "brain attack," stroke is a medical emergency as serious as a heart attack. Our Stroke Specialists are available 24 hours a day to make sure every stroke is treated immediately. Our multidisciplinary
Stroke Team stays on the leading edge of stroke treatment, using the latest technology and clot-busting drugs to treat strokes before they cause brain damage.

Established in 2006, the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI) integrates the expertise of UK HealthCare's
neurology and neurosurgery physicians and researchers. KNI is a regional referral center and a dynamic teaching and resource entity, dedicated to providing patients with comprehensive care.
The vision of KNI is to have physicians and scientists working collaboratively from all disciplines to find the causes and design new treatments for stroke.
Stroke patients at the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute have access not only to the region’s top doctors, but
also to the most advanced medical technology. KNI is
the only health care center in the region that operates
the Merci® Retrieval System, a leading-edge tool for removing potentially lethal blood clots in the brain.
