In 1990, UK opened the Center for Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard. Ever since, UK HealthCare, the university's clinical arm, has served patients, families, physicians and hospitals in southeastern Kentucky.
UK HealthCare has over 25 physicians other health professionals providing family medicine, pharmacy, psychological, gynecology, obstetrics, heart and dental care in Hazard. In March 2011, women's services were moved from North Fork Valley Community Health Center to a new location at the ARH medical mall in Hazard. UK OB-GYNs James Dawson and Misty Thompson practice full time in this new location.
In 2011, UK cardiovascular surgeon Edward Setser, MD, was jointly recruited by UK HealthCare and ARH to provide on-site heart surgery services in Hazard. And in 2013 UK HealthCare entered into an agreement with ARH to manage cardiovascular services at six ARH locations. Vidya Yalamanchi, MD; N. Rao Podapati,MD; and Srini Appakondu, MD, joined Dr. Setzer to form the UK Gill Heart Institute Appalachian Heart Center.
