Prostate cancer surgical options
UK HealthCare Urological Surgery's experienced team of physicians offer a variety of prostate cancer treatment options to meet each patient's individual needs. These treatment options include:
UK HealthCare Urological Surgery has many years of experience in traditional prostatectomy, an open-surgery procedure in which the entire prostate gland and some surrounding tissue are removed. This surgery involves an incision in either the abdomen or the scrotum area.
Minimally invasive prostatectomy
Our expertise also encompasses new, more advanced methods of performing prostate cancer surgery. For approved patients, the minimally invasive prostatectomy offers numerous benefits over traditional prostatectomy, including:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less blood loss
- Faster recovery
- Less scarring
- Quicker return to daily activities
- Retention of bladder control and erectile function
As with any surgery, each patient may react differently. Traditional prostatectomy may require a two to three day hospital stay and more than six weeks of recovery. Minimally invasive prostatectomy methods require a hospital stay of less than 24 hours and a 7-10 day recovery period.
UK HealthCare Urological Surgery offers the following minimally invasive treatment methods for prostatectomy:
The daVinci® prostatectomy
Approved prostate cancer patients can be treated with the da Vinci® Surgical System, a minimally invasive surgery method. The da Vinci System allows surgeons to improve their procedures by translating the natural hand, wrist and finger movements to the movements of the system. Surgeons can make smaller incisions, replacing the 8-10 inch incision required for traditional prostatectomy.
As with any surgical procedure, experience counts. UK HealthCare was the first health care provider in Kentucky to offer this advanced surgical technique for prostatectomy. The da Vinci system has been utilized since 2004, allowing UK HealthCare to build experience in minimally invasive radical prostatectomy.
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy
Specially trained physicians at UK HealthCare are the first in Central and Eastern Kentucky to offer the state-of-the-art laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP). This procedure is associated with lower blood loss and reduced surgical pain as compared to other procedures. LRP patients also experience a faster return to normal activity compared to open surgery patients.
