The national Magnet Hospital Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to identify and recognize excellence in nursing services. Hospitals awarded Magnet designation are referred to as Magnet Hospitals. The Magnet Hospital Recognition Program® is based on quality indicators and standards defined by the American Nurses Association. It is the highest honor a hospital can receive for its nursing services. UK Chandler Hospital’s nurses were the first in the region to receive this honor.
Magnet designation fosters a sense of pride among nursing staff and creates a positive workplace. Core values such as empowerment, mentoring, nurturing, respect, integrity and teamwork are demonstrated in Magnet hospitals, in addition to:
• Concern for the patient
• High nurse satisfaction
• High rates of staff retention
• A reputation for quality nursing care as rated by patients
• Identification by nurses as a good place to work
• High degree of teamwork
Each Magnet-designated hospital must demonstrate 14 standards based on the “Forces of Magnetism” which include:
• Quality nursing leadership
• Effective organizational structure
• Effective management style
• Promotional opportunities for personnel
• Professional models of care
• Quality care
• Quality assurance
• Expertise available to staff
• High level of autonomy
• Active community outreach
• Positive teaching experience for nurses
• Positive perception of nurses
• Positive nurse-physician relationships
• High emphasis on personal growth and development
Throughout the United States, 154 hospitals are Magnet Hospitals. UK Chandler Hospital was the 38th hospital to receive the Magnet Designation out of 7,569 hospitals in the United States.
Nursing Magnet designation helps patients find a health care organization with a proven level of nursing excellence. It is also attracts nurses who will maintain the high-quality standards of care. Independent studies show patients who receive care at Magnet hospitals have a shorter length of stay and higher satisfaction rates. Magnet designation at UK Chandler Hospital has resulted in:
