The Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program (MLCP)
at the Lucille P. Markey Cancer Center provides a
multidisciplinary approach to care for patients with
thoracic cancers (cancers of the lung and chest).
Established in 1998 as the first multidisciplinary lung
cancer program in Kentucky, our goal is to facilitate
a rapid diagnosis for patients and provide innovative
treatment, prevention and screening of lung cancer.
- Provide diagnosis and treatment for small and non-small
cell lung cancer, mesothelioma, thymoma, esophageal,
bronchial carcinoid and other thoracic cancers
- We stress a multidisciplinary approach to care: each
patient is assessed by a team of oncologists, surgeons,
radiologists, nurses and other specialists who collaborate
to develop an individualized treatment plan - ensuring
optimal patient care
- MLCP is the first program in the region to provide a true
multidisciplinary approach to lung cancer care.
- Patient clinical evaluations are available on Monday and
Thursday.
- We work in conjunction with Kentucky Neuroscience Institute. This Institute is comprised of nationally renowned
experts in the treatment of lung cancers that are
metastatic to the brain and offers state-of-the-art treatment
using steroetactic radiosurgery and other novel therapies
for this devastating complication of lung cancer.
- Specialized procedures are performed including
endobronchial implanted radiation, photodynamic
therapy, laser surgery, pleuroscopy, autofluroescent
bronchoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery
- MLCP is the first program in Kentucky to offer a
dedicated interventional pulmonology service and
endobronchial ultrasound for diagnosis and staging of
lung cancer
- MLCP is the only program to offer a multidisciplinary
approach to the management of central airway
obstruction
- UK Markey Cancer Center offers radiation medicine
treatment at UK Hospital as well as in 5 communities
in the region. Radiation medicine treatment facilities
provide care close to home and are located in Morehead,
Maysville, Berea, Georgetown, and Mt. Sterling
- We offer a centralized clinic where patients are evaluated
and treated
MLCP offers cutting-edge research and the opportunity
for patients to participate in clinical trials
- Each new patient's case is discussed in a weekly
case review conference which is attended by all team
physicians
- MLCP provides diagnostic services and care for people with
lung cancer and other types of thoracic cancers.
- More than 375 new patients each year
- More than 2000 visits annually
More than 200 outpatients seen each month
- Educational programs are offered to the public to
increase awareness about lung cancer
- Smoking cessation classes are offered throughout the
year for the public
- Participation in local community health fairs
- Physician speakers are available to speak at
conferences and events
- Clean indoor air initiatives
