Kentucky Children's Hospital Fact SheetPediatrics at UK HealthCare History Kentucky Children's Hospital was established in 1997. It was renamed in 2005 to more clearly define its role as the hospital for all children of Kentucky. The 65,000 square foot, $12 million addition to UK Hospital houses a 44-bed inpatient center; a 50-bed Level III neonatal nursery to take care of the sickest infants; a 12-bed state-of-theart pediatric intensive care unit; and 11 beds for 23-hour admissions/observation. The building also features children's play and activity rooms, expanded family consultation rooms, a family resource center, waiting rooms, conference rooms, and a pediatric staff library. Services offered Kentucky Children's Hospital serves as the subspecialty regional referral and pediatric care center for Central and Eastern Kentucky. Our Transport Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It provides safe and rapid access for critically ill infants and children to services at the Kentucky Children's Hospital. Patients served Inpatient admissions each year number about 5,500 with about 4,250 non-ICU floor admissions, 570 PICU admissions, 720 NICU admissions and 1,610 admissions to the newborn nursery. Patients are admitted by pediatrics, pediatric surgery, other surgical subspecialties, neurology and pediatric dentistry. Family/patient oriented Kentucky Children's Hospital was designed for children and their families. There is a separate entrance, admitting area, private patient rooms with pull-out beds for parents, individual bathrooms, a laundry facility, a kitchen for parents and a sibling play area. Education A children's multi-media center helps patients stay up-to-date on their studies. A full-time teacher visits patients to continue their school routine. Kentucky Children's Hospital is the lead organization for Fayette County Safe Kids Coalition, which promotes childhood injury prevention. As a community service, Kentucky Children's Hospital provides Safe Sitter classes to teach babysitting skills to 11-15 year olds. Development The Office of Development at Kentucky Children’s Hospital works with individuals, business and foundations to elevate the level of care the hospital provides patients. In 2007, outright gifts from donors totaled nearly $3 million. Private support makes it possible for the hospital to recruit the top pediatric specialists in the country, use the best medical equipment available, conduct research to find cures for childhood diseases and provide a comfortable, family-centered environment that promotes healing. Public recognition Kentucky Children's Hospital ranked 28th in the nation for children's hospitals by Child magazine in 2001. UK Hospital/Kentucky Children's Hospital was the 38th hospital in the nation to receive Magnet Designation, the nation's highest honor for excellence in nursing services awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association. Only 145 of the 7,569 hospitals in the nation have achieved this prestigious designation. UK Hospital/Kentucky Children's Hospital received full accreditation without requirements for improvement in the 2004 survey conducted by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. Kentucky Children's Hospital is a member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). |
