Implantable Contact Lens Fact SheetImplantable contact lens at UK HealthCare Implantable contact lens The implantable contact lens is made from a soft plastic and collagen-based material that is placed behind the iris by a trained ophthalmic surgeon. The implantable contact lens improves moderate to severe nearsightedness, but is not intended to correct astigmatism. The implantable contact lens provides permanent correction of nearsightedness as long as the implantable contact lens remains in the eye. The implantable contact lens also contains an ultraviolet light filter. Best candidates The best candidates for implantable contact lens are between the ages of 21 and 45, with moderate to severe nearsightedness. Other aspects of candidacy are best discussed with an eye doctor in a one-on-one consultation. Advantages This new state-of-the-art procedure has many advantages, including the following. Is an implantable contact lens noticable? No. Because the lens is positioned behind the iris, neither you nor an observer will be able to identify the implantable contact lens in place. Implantable contact lens procedure The implantable contact lens procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, which means the patient has surgery and leaves the same day. An anesthetic is administered, ensuring the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. Vision changes The implantable contact lens is designed to give a lifetime of vision correction. However, there are major changes in one’s vision, the implantable contact lens can easily be removed or replaced, or another procedure can be performed.
