Opened in 1962, the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, a 473-bed acute care hospital, is part of the UK HealthCare patient care enterprise. Integral components of the comprehensive services UK Chandler Hospital provides are Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky
Children’s Hospital, Gill Heart Institute, Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and the Center for Advanced Surgery. UK Chandler Hospital has Central and Eastern Kentucky’s only Level I trauma center, and handles the most severe traumas. It has the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the area to treat the sickest infants. The hospital also offers 100 intensive care beds, a post-anesthesia care unit, 17 operating rooms, 14-bed labor and delivery, and 26 mother-baby rooms. The hospital draws upon the resources of six UK colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health.
UK Chandler Hospital discharges about 22,000 patients each year. Our patients come from the following geographic areas:
- Fayette County – 31%
- Bluegrass Area Development District – 25% (16-county area)
- Central and Eastern Kentucky – 37% (46-county area)
- Other – 6%
About 40 percent of UK Chandler Hospital’s admissions come through the emergency department, which provides services to nearly 45,000 patients annually.
- Services for children are offered through Kentucky Children’s Hospital. The 65,000-square-foot, $12 million addition to UK Chandler Hospital houses a 44-bed inpatient center; a 50-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit to take care of the sickest infants; a 12-bed state-of-the-art pediatric intensive care unit; and 11 beds for 23-hour admissions/observation.
- A vast array of health care services, such as organ transplantation, high-risk obstetrics, trauma, minimally invasive surgery, cancer care, geriatric care, cardiac care, burn treatment, neurosurgery and psychiatry are offered at UK Chandler Hospital.
- The region’s only robotic da Vinci™ Surgical System, Leksell Gamma Knife® C stereotactic radiosurgery unit and hyperbaric oxygen unit are available to treat a wide variety of conditions with the latest technology.
- A state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy center is available.

- UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital was ranked by U.S.News & World Report among the 50 best hospitals in the United States for 2007 in three categories: gynecology; ear, nose and throat; and cancer. UK Chandler Hospital was the only hospital in Lexington and one of only three in the state to be ranked.
- UK Chandler Hospital/Kentucky Children’s Hospital was the 38th hospital in the nation to receive Magnet™ designation, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in nursing services awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association. Only 2 percent of hospitals in the nation have achieved this prestigious designation. In 2005, UK Chandler Hospital/Kentucky Children’s Hospital was redesignated a Magnet hospital.
- UK received full accreditation in the 2006 survey conducted by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
- Sixteen UK HealthCare doctors were named to the 2006 edition of America’s Top Doctors®. Published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., the book recognizes doctors considered among the best in their specialties in both patient care and research. In 2005, fifteen UK doctors received this honor.
