History

Opened in 1962, University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, now a 473-bed academic medical center, is part of the UK HealthCare patient care enterprise. Integral components of the comprehensive services UK Chandler Hospital provides are Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, Gill Heart Institute, Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and the Center for Advanced Surgery. UK Chandler Hospital has Central and Eastern Kentucky’s only Level I trauma center. UK Chandler Hospital handles the most severe traumas and has the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the area to treat the sickest infants. The hospital also offers a 100-bed intensive care unit, post-anesthesia care unit, 17 operating rooms, 14-bed labor unit, and 26 mother-baby units. The hospital draws upon the resources of six UK colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health.

Patients served

UK Chandler Hospital discharges about 22,000 patients each year. Our patients come from the following geographic areas:
• Fayette County – 31%
• Blue Grass Area Development District – 25% (16-county area)
• Central and Eastern Kentucky – 37% (46-county area)
• Other – 6%
Approximately 40 percent of UK Chandler Hospital’s admissions come through the emergency department, which provides services to nearly 45,000 patients each year.

Advanced medicine and patient care services

• Services for children are offered through Kentucky Children’s Hospital. The 65,000 square foot, $12 million addition to UK Chandler Hospital houses a 44-bed inpatient center; a 50-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit to take care of the sickest infants; a 12-bed state-of-the-art pediatric intensive care unit; and 11 beds for 23-hour admissions/observation.
• A vast array of health care services, such as organ transplantation, high–risk obstetrics, trauma,
minimally invasive surgery, cancer, geriatric care, cardiac care, burn treatment, neurosurgery and
psychiatry are offered.
• The region’s only robotic da VinciTM Surgical System, Leksell Gamma Knife® C stereotactic radiosurgery unit and hyperbaric oxygen unit are available to treat a wide variety of conditions with the latest technology.
• A state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy center is available.

• Veterans Affairs Medical Center
• Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, a pediatric and adult rehabilitation facility
• The Ridge Hospital, a psychiatric facility
• Shriner’s Hospital, which serves children from a six-state area and some foreign countries.

Public recognition

• UK Chandler Hospital/Kentucky Children's Hospital was the 38th hospital in the nation to receive Magnet™ designation, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in nursing services awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association. Only 2 percent of hospitals in the nation have achieved this prestigious designation. In 2005, UK Chandler Hospital/Kentucky Children’s Hospital was redesignated a Magnet Hospital.
• UK received full accreditation without requirements for improvement in the 2004 survey conducted by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
• Fifteen UK HealthCare doctors were named to the 2005 edition of America’s Top Doctors®.
Published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., the book recognizes doctors considered among the best in their specialties in both patient care and research.
• 64 UK HealthCare doctors made the 2005 Best Doctors® in America list. Only those rated the best by other doctors are awarded the title of Best Doctor, representing the top five percent of doctors in the nation in more than 400 subspecialties of medicine.
