UK Chandler Hospital Fact SheetHistory Opened in 1962, University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, now a 473-bed academic medical center, is part of the UK HealthCare patient care enterprise. Integral components of the comprehensive services UK Chandler Hospital provides are Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, Gill Heart Institute, Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and the Center for Advanced Surgery. UK Chandler Hospital has Central and Eastern Kentucky’s only Level I trauma center. UK Chandler Hospital handles the most severe traumas and has the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the area to treat the sickest infants. The hospital also offers a 100-bed intensive care unit, post-anesthesia care unit, 17 operating rooms, 14-bed labor unit, and 26 mother-baby units. The hospital draws upon the resources of six UK colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health. Patients served UK Chandler Hospital discharges about 22,000 patients each year. Our patients come from the following geographic areas: Advanced medicine and patient care services
• Services for children are offered through Kentucky Children’s Hospital. The 65,000 square foot, $12 million addition to UK Chandler Hospital houses a 44-bed inpatient center; a 50-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit to take care of the sickest infants; a 12-bed state-of-the-art pediatric intensive care unit; and 11 beds for 23-hour admissions/observation. Only 2 percent of hospitals in the nation have achieved this prestigious designation. In 2005, UK Chandler Hospital/Kentucky Children’s Hospital was redesignated a Magnet Hospital.
