Center for Advanced Training and Simulation

Director: J. Scott Roth, MD

The Center for Advanced Training and Simulation’s goal is to become one of the top-ranked teaching programs in the country through an aggressive training program for UK College of Medicine residents. Our state-of-the-art laboratory offers skills training stations that reproduce operating room conditions, along with access to a multimedia library of procedures and training materials. One key component of our laboratory is the 3D minimally invasive surgery skills training environment that includes real-time feedback and performance evaluation.

All levels of health care providers in training, including nurses and practicing surgeons in Kentucky, may benefit from our skills training. Interactive wireless technology enables endoscopic surgeries at UK HealthCare to be sent all over the world for training and international conferences.

UK HealthCare surgeons employ minimally invasive, “keyhole” surgery, to treat patients when appropriate. Educating patients and families about procedures through handouts, web pages, and personal interaction is an important part of providing excellent customer service and surgical care.

To advance patient care, our faculty compares new minimally invasive techniques with traditional techniques in respect to recovery time and economic impact. Developments in new technologies, such as advancement in sophisticated instrumentation and imaging techniques, are part of our research focus. Because of the Center for Advanced Training and Simulation, Kentuckians are in a unique situation with access to the latest in minimally invasive therapy across the spectrum – vascular surgery, transplants, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiothoracic surgery, and general and pediatric surgery.

Center tours are available for all organizations and ages, but please limit group size to 15 participants or less.
