Collaboration - UK Hospital and Medical Center Library
The Medical Center Library and the University of Kentucky Hospital, have entered into a unique partnership to provide quality health information for patients and families across the continuum of care at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. The results of this collaboration are expanded Patient Education Services and a recently opened Health Information Library.
The Hospital provides:
- a full-time registered nurse patient education manager
- office space for the Patient Education Department
- the overall budget for patient education, including books, journals, pamphlets, and CareNotesT
- the design, development, and funding for the new Health Information Library
The Medical Center Library contributes:
- a full-time medical librarian devoted to patient education
- a part-time student assistant
- technical processing of books and journals
- electronic subscriptions to Health Reference Center and MD Consult
The joint responsibilities of Patient Education Services include:
- running the Health Information Libary
- responding to reference requests from patients, families, and health care professionals within the UK Chandler Hospital
- coordinating Micromedex's CareNotesT Patient Education program on the Medical Center's Intranet
- developing and maintaining the Center for Health Information's Web site (for both nurses and patients)
- creating focused Unit-Based Patient Education Resource Collections (patient education collections) on the various patient care units
- training nurses and other health care providers to effectively utilize available health information resources
- coordinating the enterprise-wide pamphlet collection
- facilitating patient education programs across the continuum of care
- complying with the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organization's patient and family education standards
