About the Health Information Library

The Health Information Library (HIL) is just one component of the University of Kentucky Hospital's Patient Education Services. These services are a collaborative effort between UK Hospital and the UK Chandler Hospital Medical Library.
Patient Education provides a number of services, including:
- Obtaining and delivering patient education resources upon individual request of staff, patients, and families
- Staffing and maintaining the Health Information Library
- Setting up and maintaining Unit-Based Patient Education Resource Collections
- Setting up and training health care providers on the Intranet version of the CareNotesT patient education program across the continuum of care
- Developing and maintaining patient education Web page
- Facilitating multidisciplinary patient education teams
- Transferring UK patient education booklets onto the Web (PDF format)
- Ordering and distributing supplemental pamphlets (e.g., Critical Care Center's Intensive Care Unit booklet)
Patient Education Services Mission/Vision
The University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital supports patient and family education as a means to help people of the commonwealth and beyond to gain and retain good health. The goal at the UK Hospital is to provide patients and families with the knowledge, skills, and support necessary to promote health and wellness, make informed decisions, utilize health care resources effectively, maximize self-care, and promote recovery.
Our vision is to become a leader in Kentucky in providing patient and family education across the continuum of care - from hospital to clinic to the home.
Patient Education Services Purpose and Goals
The purpose and goals of Patient Education Services at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital are as follows:
Purpose
- Centralize patient education resources
- Provide patient education resources for the top diagnoses seen at the UK Hospital as well as for the areas covered by the UK Chandler Hospital Centers for Excellence
- Provide patient education resources at the point of care to assist staff in providing high quality patient education
- Promote patient education programs across the continuum of care
- Comply with Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations patient and family education standards
Goals
- Provide current, research-based patient and family education across the lifespan
- Establish a Health Information Library that contains a core collection of materials in all formats - print, audiovisual, and electronic
- Address the learning needs of people from all literacy levels, populations, and cultures served by UK Hospital
- Facilitate the development of multidisciplinary patient education programs across the continuum of care
- Provide health care providers with resources to support their patient education programs
- Achieve customer loyalty (patients, families, health care providers)
- Utilize an outcome-based approach to patient education
