See also inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). ultrasonography - Using the reflections of high-frequency sound waves to construct an image of a body organ (a sonogram); commonly used to observe fetal growth. ultrasound - The use of ultrasonic waves for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, specifically to image an internal body structure, monitor a developing fetus, or generate localized deep heat to the tissues. upper GI endoscopy - Looking into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum with an endoscope. See also endoscopy. upper GI series - X-rays of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The patient swallows barium first. Barium makes the organs show up on x-rays. Also called barium meal. urea breath test - A test used to detect Helicobacter pylori infection. The test measures breath samples for urease, an enzyme H. pylori makes. ureters - Two tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. urethra - Narrow channel through which urine passes from the bladder out of the body. urethritis - Infection limited to the urethra. urge incontinence - The inability to hold urine long enough to reach a restroom. urgent - Anything non-life threatening. urinary incontinence - Loss of bladder control. urticaria - A skin condition, commonly known as hives, an itchy skin eruption characterized by weals with pale interiors and well-defined red margins; usually the result of an allergic response to insect bites or food or drugs. uterus - Hollow, muscular organ in the center of the female
pelvis that sheds its lining each month during menstruation and in which a
fertilized egg can implant
