UK Sports Rehabilitation brings together a multidisciplinary team of sports medicine professionals to provide you with a physician-directed program of treatment, rehabilitation and conditioning.

Physical therapists are a key component of the team and they work closely with your physician to develop the best rehabilitation plan for you. The highly trained physical therapy team has more than 100 years of combined experience. In addition:
- Several of the therapists hold American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties certifications in Sports Medicine and Orthopedics.
- More than half of the rehabilitation team members hold clinical doctorate degrees.
- Team members have specialty certifications in athletic training, strength and conditioning, and Pilates.
UK Sports Rehabilitation offers a scientific, evidence-based approach to individualize your plan of treatment and rehabilitation. The team uses progressive techniques to ensure the safest and most efficient rehabilitation possible and incorporates injury prevention education to help avoid future injuries.

UK Sports Rehabilitation is in a new facility located at UK HealthCare at Turfland, 2195 Harrodsburg Road, Suite 125.
The new facility is easy to access from most parts of Lexington, offers plenty of free surface parking and is all on ground level- no stairs to climb! Our clinic features a spacious gym area completely surrounded by large windows.
In addition to the open gym area that houses state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment, it features private rooms for detailed evaluations and treatment when more privacy is required. Free surface parking is available, and we are located on the first floor.
This comfortable, well-designed space allows the most effective treatment for all patients as they return to desired activities.

Karen Benson, PT
Karen Benson earned her Bachelors of Health Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Kentucky in 1992. She had previously received Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University in 1990. Karen has worked for UK Healthcare since 1992, specifically in the Sports Physical Therapy clinic since 1993 serving as a principle therapist and supervisor of the clinic in the past. She received her Rehabilitation certification in Pilates from Polestar in 2000. She has presented at local, state and national conferences.
Karen’s experience has focused on treating musculoskeletal injuries of the ankle, knee, hip and shoulder. She enjoys working with all types of athletes and has experience treating performing artists (dancers).
Mark F. Elkin PT, DPT, CMM, CGFI – MP3
Mark received his Bachelors of Health Science in Physical Therapy from the University Of Kentucky College Of Allied Health Professions in 1989. He later completed a Certificate in Medical Management from the University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business and Economics in 2001.
In 2013 he earned a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University Of Kentucky College Of Health Sciences. He is also a Certified Medical Professional – Level 3, by Titleist Performance Institute, the world’s leading organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.
Mark has 25 years of clinical experience and his interests include evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in athletes of all skill levels from recreational to professional. Mark is also experienced in treating military personnel and injuries that may be unique to that population.
Kelly Eversole, PT, DPT, CSCS
Kelly earned her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Ohio University in 2001. She had previously received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Ohio University in 1999. She then went on to receive her doctorate of physical therapy at the University of Kentucky in 2009. In 1999 she became a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Her areas of interest include orthopedic condition, athletes/runners, post-operative care, orthotic fabrication, and return to sport.
She enjoys helping athletes and weekend warriors alike return to activity. She uses a combination of manual techniques and functional exercises to help patients achieve optimal function. Outside of work, she enjoys running races and spending time with her family.
John Jurjans, PT, DPT, ATC, SCS
John Jurjans has been at UK Sports Rehabilitation since 2010 after moving from Southeastern Pennsylvania with his wife and two children. He has been a physical therapist since 1998 after graduating from the University of Delaware physical therapy program. In 2001, he completed a sports physical therapy fellowship at Duke University. He has been board certified as a sports clinical specialist since 2004 and has been certified as an athletic trainer since 2002. He obtained a clinical doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 2013. Jurjans has given presentations locally and nationally on a variety of sports medicine topics. His special interests in physical therapy include rehabilitation of sports medicine injuries as well as post-operative care for extremity surgical procedures. Jurjans was part of the group that established the first physical therapy residency program at UK and currently serves as both co-director and mentor of that program.
Morgan Lester, PT, DPT
Morgan Lester earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Kentucky in 2016 after completing her undergraduate work at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky. Her areas of interest include sports-related injuries, orthopaedic conditions and post-operative conditions. Lester was the first resident in the sports physical therapy residency program at UK, which began in fall 2017.
Ryan McGuire, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, CSCS
Ryan McGuire has earned both a master’s degree and a clinical doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Kentucky. He has been board certified as an orthopaedic clinical specialist since 2010 and has been a certified strength and conditioning specialist since 2006. McGuire has worked with high school, collegiate, professional and Olympic athletes. In addition to his clinical work, McGuire has taught at the University of Kentucky and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He has also presented locally and nationally at continuing-education courses on sports rehabilitation and manual therapy. Most recently, McGuire was part of the group that established the first physical therapy residency program at the University of Kentucky and currently serves as both co-director and mentor.
Katie Robertson, PT, DPT
Katie earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Bellarmine University in 2013. She had previously received a bachelor of science in biology with a minor in chemistry from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2011. In 2012 she became a Sportsmetric Certified trainer. Katie recently moved from Hilton Head Island, SC, where she practiced in an orthopedic, sport, and spine clinic.
In addition to her clinical work, Katie also served on South Carolina’s Physical Therapy Board-Political Action Committee, a youth soccer coach for the Island Recreational League, a volunteer for PTR Wheelchair Championships, a Relay for life Board Member: Recreational Chair, and a Special Olympics Volunteer. Katie enjoys working with athletes. Her interests are in ACL injury prevention, return-to-sport conditioning and post-concussion management.
Chad Schmeeckle, PT, DPT
Chad Schmeeckle earned a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2014. Schmeeckle moved to Lexington from Fort Worth, Texas, where he practiced in an orthopaedic and sports clinic. He has been a certified strength and conditioning specialist since 2015 and has experience training athletes of various levels. He also holds a clinical instructor certification from the American Physical Therapy Association and enjoys mentoring physical therapy students during clinical rotations. Schmeeckle has special interest in treating return-to-sport training, post-op conditions of the knee and shoulder, and clinical education. He is currently pursuing his board certification in sports physical therapy.
Richard Watson, PT, OCS
Richard earned his Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of North Georgia in 1998. He completed his undergraduate education at Auburn University in 1992. He completed board certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) since 2004. Richard has also completed advance training in manual therapy hosted by the Medical University of South Carolina School of Physical Therapy earning his manual therapy certification in 2005.
Richard has served as Sports Rehabilitation’s departmental supervisor since 2012, prior to joining UK healthcare Richard served as Director of Rehabilitation for a multidisciplinary hospital.
