Volunteer at UK HealthCare

Why volunteer?

Interested in giving some of your time to help others during what can be a stressful period in their lives? Looking for a way to give back to the community? Curious to learn more about health care professions?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above, why not become a UK HealthCare volunteer? Our office offers a wide variety of opportunities across the UK HealthCare Enterprise. We provide volunteers with an opportunity to use their skills and abilities to make a positive impact on the patient and family experience.

The benefits of volunteering

When you volunteer your time at UK HealthCare, you'll know you're assisting people who really need you. Our volunteers say that the time they give at UK HealthCare is an invaluable experience and the appreciation of the people they help is its greatest reward.

Even so, we also like to recognize our volunteers for all the hard work they do. Our volunteers receive:

  • Special celebrations throughout the year.
  • Group outings, including trips to Keeneland and other historic places across Kentucky.
  • Free parking pass (unavailable for current UK employees and/or students).
  • Free LexTran fare with your UK Volunteer ID badge.
  • Discount on meals in our cafeterias and cafe areas.

Our current opportunities

Volunteers are used all across the healthcare campus: UK Chandler and UK Good Samaritan emergency departments, information desks, surgery waiting rooms, gift shops and ambulatory clinics. URGENT NEED: UK Auxiliary Gift Shops in Pavilion A and Pavilion H. Whether providing gift items, comfort items or essentials, our gift shop volunteers serve patients, visitors, families and staff members. A cheerful disposition and an interest in learning about hospital retail is all that is needed to join our gift shop team! Detailed training is provided.

Adults who are 18 years and older are welcome and encouraged to join us in caring for the people of the Commonwealth. We have a yearly summer program for teens ages 14-17. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two hours a week, and there is no maximum. We'll work with you to create a schedule that fits your lifestyle. At this time, we are not accepting applications for the Kentucky Children's Hospital, including NICU/Baby Cuddler and Child Life programs (current as of 3/1/2017).

College students

If you're interested in volunteering during the Fall 2017 semester, information will be posted on our website Aug. 1, 2017. We cannot accept new college students over the summer due to our teen program.

Teen volunteers

The 2017 Summer Teen Volunteer Program is available to teens ages 14-17. This program allows high school students an opportunity to explore the nature of a large healthcare facility, as well as provide volunteer service to the community. Mandatory Orientation is on Wednesday, June 7, times TBA. The program runs from June 19 to July 28; shifts are from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. with an hour lunch break from noon to 1 p.m. Teens are required to participate in five of the six weeks, at minimum of two shifts per week, for a total of 30 hours. Teens must provide their own lunch and transportation.

Types of applicants we are looking for:

  • The teen has expressed a sincere, personal desire to volunteer at UK HealthCare. Teen should be able to work independently and be comfortable initiating conversations. If any questions arise about the program, they should call or email themselves.
  • The teen is motivated, outgoing and has an interest in healthcare.

Once the teens are selected, there will be no exceptions. Our goal is to create a safe environment for our patients and to provide a memorable and fun experience for our teen volunteers.

Download our Teen Application Packet (PDF, 3.8 MB), and complete. Please mail or drop off packets to:
