Volunteer at UK HealthCare

Why volunteer?

Interested in giving some of your time to help others during what can be a stressful period in their lives? Looking for a way to give back to the community? Curious to learn more about health care professions?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above, why not become a UK HealthCare volunteer? Our office offers a wide variety of opportunities across the UK HealthCare Enterprise. We provide volunteers with an opportunity to use their skills and abilities to make a positive impact on the patient and family experience.

The benefits of volunteering

When you volunteer your time at UK HealthCare, you'll know you're assisting people who really need you. Our volunteers say that the time they give at UK HealthCare is an invaluable experience and the appreciation of the people they help is its greatest reward.

Even so, we also like to recognize our volunteers for all the hard work they do. Our volunteers receive:

  • Special celebrations throughout the year.
  • Group outings, including trips to Keeneland and other historic places across Kentucky.
  • Free parking pass (unavailable for current UK employees and/or students).
  • Discount on meals in our cafeterias and cafe areas.

Our current opportunities

Volunteers are needed all across the health care campus: in the UK Chandler and UK Good Samaritan emergency departments, information desks, surgery and ICU family lounges, gift shops, and ambulatory clinics. At this time, we are not accepting applications for the Kentucky Children's Hospital (includes NICU/Baby Cuddler and Child Life programs).

Adults who are 18 years and older are welcome and encouraged to join us in caring for the people of the Commonwealth. We have a yearly summer program for teens ages 14-17. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two hours a week, and there is no maximum. We'll work with you to create a schedule that fits your lifestyle. For information on how to apply and set up an interview, please download the 2016 Teen Application packet (PDF, 3.3 MB). During the interview we will discuss your paperwork, areas of interest, volunteer guidelines and schedules. Interviews will begin March 29 and continue until all placements are filled. Please be sure to schedule as soon as possible to ensure your space in the program! Our office is located on the first floor of Pavilion A, Room A.01.129, in Chandler Medical Center. Please stop at the Information Desk in the main lobby for directions.

All teen volunteers must attend a Mandatory Orientation Session on Wednesday, June 8. The program will begin June 20 and continue through July 29. All teen volunteers are required to volunteer four of the six weeks in order to complete the program.

Thank you for your willingness to get involved and make a difference! We look forward to meeting with you!
