Patients with cancer of the colon, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas, stomach and esophagus are given advanced care at the UK Markey Cancer Center. We offer state-of-the-art gastrointestinal cancer screening and diagnoses as well as the latest advances in surgical, radiation and chemotherapeutic interventions. Our team has special expertise in extensive radical surgery on the esophagus, stomach, liver, colon and rectum.
The SPORE grant
Markey Cancer Center Director Mark Evers, MD, led the successful effort to acquire a National Cancer Institute-funded SPORE (Specialized Programs in Research Excellence) grant in gastrointestinal cancers.

Extensive radical surgery on the esophagus, stomach, liver, colon and rectum; total proctectomy and J-pouch reconstruction for rectal cancer; total rectal resection using the colo-anal reconstruction technique; nerve-preserving surgery in rectal cancer to preserve sexual function; "tumor downstaging" using innovative preoperative chemoradiation therapy programs; treating liver cancer that may not be amenable to surgical excision with state-of-the-art radiofrequency ablation techniques or stereotactic body radiation therapy; complex operative and chemoradiation therapy treatment for pancreatic cancer; pathological diagnosis of unusual gastrointestinal tumor; interpretation of ultrasound, CT and MRI imaging for gastrointestinal tumors.
