Leading-edge stroke care
Stroke patients at the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute have access not only to the region's top doctors, but also to the most advanced medical technology. UK HealthCare was the first health care center in the region to offer the Merci® Retrieval System, a leading-edge tool for removing potentially lethal blood clots in the brain.
Leading-edge stroke treatments offered at UK HealthCare:
- Intravenous thrombolysis
- Intra-arterial thrombolysis
- Endovascular Merci Retrieval System®
- Clinical trials
The Merci Retrieval System is an FDA-approved device used to remove blood clots from patients experiencing a stroke. With the minimally invasive system, a catheter is inserted through in an artery (usually in the groin), and a doctor uses X-ray imaging to guide the system to the clot. The Merci retriever grabs the clot and inflates a tiny balloon to prevent a sudden rush of blood from interfering with removal of the clot. The Merci device is then used to remove the clot from the body through the catheter. After the clot is removed, the balloon deflates and normal blood flow resumes.
