Health care can be confusing and complex, especially during times of crisis. The new
Don and Cathy Jacobs Health Education Center, located on the Floor 1 concourse of
Pavilion A, serves as a central resource to help patients and families research their
medical questions. The new center replaces the former Health Information Library in UK
Chandler Hospital's Pavilion H.
Studies show that patients who access health information are more likely to have
better health outcomes. Health education can encourage patients to make positive
behavioral changes and to work with their physicians to take greater preventative
measures. Additionally, educated patients are more inclined to seek care early, when
their conditions are more manageable and more receptive to treatment. In general,
educated patients tend to be highly engaged in the healing process.
The Health Education Center and its professional staff provide the following
- Assistance for patients, families, visitors and staff in obtaining health
information in various and easily understood learning formats and languages.
- Support for medical professionals who educate patients and families.
- Computers, printers and free Internet access.
- Free copying and faxing.
- Books, pamphlets, audio-video resources and anatomical models.
- Lists of recommended, high-quality health information websites.
- Patient-education programs.
- Private viewing room for video, DVD and Internet programming.
- Business center.
Folk Art Gallery
The new center is also home to the UK Arts in HealthCare's collection of whimsical
Kentucky folk art, curated by the Kentucky Folk Art Center. More than a dozen pieces of
art are on display, including the sculpture "Ferris Wheel," by Ronald and Jesse Cooper;
a mixed media piece "Pack Peddler," by Charley Kinney; and a variety of regional
wildlife sculptures. Visitors can enjoy the richness of this Kentucky tradition while
getting the information they need to be well-informed participants in their health care
Don and Cathy Jacobs
The Don and Cathy Jacobs Health Education Center is named for Lexington business owner
Don Jacobs and his wife. After serving in the Army as a young man, Jacobs founded an
auto dealership in Lexington, followed by a finance company focused on the unique needs
of service men and women.
Inspired by the progress that UK HealthCare has made over the last seven years under
the leadership of Dr. Michael Karpf, executive vice president for health affairs, the
Jacobses have pledged financial support to a cause that can "help as many people as
possible." With their generous gift, the new Don and Cathy Jacobs Health Education
Center is poised to serve generations of Kentucky families in their mission to achieve
greater health and well-being.
