The UK Gill Heart Institute is at the forefront in the battle against heart disease and stroke in Kentucky and is nationally recognized as a leader in advancing the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
The Gill Heart Institute was founded in 1997 with a gift of $5 million from philanthropists Linda and Jack Gill to establish a comprehensive academic program in cardiovascular medicine and science. Gill’s comprehensive approach to heart and vascular health begins with promoting cardiovascular wellness and extends to treating life-threatening complications with the newest therapies and devices.
Our goal is to provide every patient with exceptionally compassionate care in the safest and most appropriate manner possible based on the best evidence and the latest technological advances.
Gill’s multidisciplinary clinical team includes board-certified adult and pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac radiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists working in state-of-the-art facilities available in the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital.
Our complete cardiovascular program has the most sophisticated imaging capabilities in the region, as well as leading-edge interventional cardiology procedures including:
• Minimally invasive approaches to heart disease
• Exceptional surgical services for heart and vascular disease (including performing the only heart and multiple-organ transplants in the region)
• Cardiac rehabilitation
• Wellness program
Our physicians have offices at the Gill Heart Institute on the UK campus, at Maxwell Street in downtown Lexington and nearly a dozen outreach sites around the Commonwealth.
The Gill Heart Institute’s patient-centered focus is based on the latest evidence and guidelines. With this philosophy, we strive to reduce the number of transitions and keep the time in the hospital no longer than necessary.
This approach means we do what is best for our patients and treat them as individuals. We are proud to be ranked among the top 10 percent of comparable U.S. hospitals for following “appropriateness” criteria established by the prestigious American College of Cardiology, meaning care that follows the best practices established by the foremost experts in the field.
In more than a year, there has not been a single coronary angioplasty procedure that was deemed inappropriate by the National Cardiovascular Data Registry. Although we have the technologic and professional expertise to perform any and every cardiac procedure, when patients come to the Gill Heart Institute, they only undergo procedures that truly improve their well-being.
These achievements fulfill our promise to Kentuckians to provide the best cardiovascular care possible and to first, do no harm.
