Since having our second child I have had a pain and sometimes feel a bulge on the left side that goes away when I lie down. Could this be a hernia? I have mentioned it to my doctor a couple of times.
A bulge that occurs in the groin that resolves when lying down is likely to be a hernia. Hernias in women can be difficult to diagnose. Occasionally an ultraound can be performed to confirm the diagnosis. However, if a physician is able to identify the hernia on exam, then no further testing is required. Most inguinal hernias can be repaired laparoscopically with a quick recovery. Patients leave the hospital on the same day and most patients experience discomfort for only a day or two.

This is usually caused by excessive exertion. This forced effort can cause the hernia to protrude even more, making it worse. Because of this, women are discouraged to carry excessive weight bearing and to avoid foods that can cause constipation.
