My husband has a hernia to the left of his privates.  We have been trying to get pregnant for 5+ yrs, and he thinks because this hernia is there that he can't get me pregnant, is it true?

I was told that if I get on a certain pill I can get pregnant. That I have no problem other than that.

Hernias are unlikely to cause problems with fertility.  Although hernias can travel along the spermatic cord and descend into the scrotum, the hernia will reside adjacent to the testicle and vas deferens(the tube that carries sperm) and is unlikely to cause any problems with sperm production.

I would recommend that your husband have a semen analysis to determine if he is producing sperm.  This would be the most effective method of determining his fertility.

Hernia repair should be considered in all individuals with a groin hernia due to the risk of incarceration or strangulation.  However, the likelihood of an incarcerated hernia is low and an asymptomatic hernia rarely causes acute problems.  If his hernia is causing pain, it should be repaired sooner.  Hernia repair is unlikely to improve his fertility.
