My husband had sports hernia surgery about 7 weeks ago.  He is only 27.

Since surgery he has had severe pain in his throat and on down and he says it is not getting better.  He says he had some indigestion days prior to surgery but nothing what he experiences now which is everyday this burning sensation and much more severe.  Does this have anything to do with the surgery or could the hernia have been a sign of any other issues in regards to the groin/abdominal/digestive track area?

Also, any suggestions to assist in reducing the amount of scar tissue at the site of surgery?  Finally, he also complains how it just "feels weird".  Will this always be the case or is there something to do to remedy this?

thank you

Throat pain following a sports hernia repair would not be considered typical.  This could be related to his anesthesia or the tube that is utilized when he is asleep.  He should contact his surgeon to have an evaluation.

Indigestion following a sports hernia repair may be related to taking pain medications or anti-inflammatory medications such as motrin, advil etc.  If he is taking these medications, they should be discontinued.  The stress of the operation could have exacerbated an underlying problem such as an ulcer, gastritis, esophagitis etc.  If he is having daily problems with indigestion, heartburn, or abdominal pain, he should contact his surgeon.

Some over the counter Vitamin E based lotions and creams can help to minimize scarring after surgery.  It is generally safe to use these several weeks following the operation.  Most patients will not have any sensation of their hernia repair after 7 weeks.  This will likely resolve over the weeks to come.  I would definitely encourage you to contact your surgeon for an evaluation.

I hope this helps!
