The Bridge is Coming, The Bridge is Coming

This weekend is another exciting milestone for the new UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Beginning tonight, the pedestrian bridge that connects the hospital parking garage, located on the corner of Transcript Avenue and Nicholasville Road, to the new hospital will be put in place. This may seem like an ordinary part of the construction, but when I heard the details on how the bridge was going to be put into place, I was intrigued. Now I don't know that much about construction, but I do know that this bridge is pretty incredible in size and that the workers are building it onsite and they will be simply lifting it into place over Nicholasville Road. In discussing this I have flashbacks to the Tinker Toys that I played with as a child.  For those of you that might be younger than I am... Tinker Toys were the precursor to Lego Blocks. You can see from the pictures below the steel beams are in place, but they need to be put together for full completion. If all works out well, I hope to post an update to the blog on Monday showing the "before" and "after" pictures showing the change that has taken place this weekend.

Traffic will be detoured this weekend to allow this to take place. I received the following from our public relations folks, which describes how to get around the construction. "Drivers going north on Nicholasville Road who need to access UK Chandler Hospital and the UK HealthCare parking garage should turn right onto Cooper Drive, then left onto University, left onto Huguelet Drive and left again on Rose Street/Hospital Drive. After passing in front of the hospital, traffic will cross South Limestone at Transcript to enter the garage. As local traffic will be allowed between Virginia Avenue and the construction area, drivers going south on S. Limestone can proceed to Transcript Avenue and turn right to access the garage as they normally would."

This weekend is also 2nd Sunday, which I have posted about previously. On Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2:00 we are all going to take to the streets of downtown Lexington to support this physical fitness initiative. Please join us as we take a step forward to a healthier lifestyle whether it is walking, biking, yoga, participating in health screenings or gathering health information. There will be lots of activities to choose from to engage you and your family. I will be there participating and encourage each of you to join me!
