UK HealthCare "One Stop Conference" Promotes Women's Health
On Saturday morning, June 6, I dropped by the "Women: It's All About You" Conference held at the Embassy Suites. This was the first comprehensive women's health conference offered by UK HealthCare. The event attracted well over 200 attendees to hear outstanding speakers all of whom are UK physicians, observe exhibits, and participate in screenings. The information at the exhibits was very informative and I was quite impressed by the long lines of women waiting to take advantage of the free health screenings. In prior years there had been disease specific forums, but this approach, for the first time, pulled it all together in a "one stop shopping" approach. I would like to offer my congratulations to Dr. Leslie Crofford the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Women's Health for UK HealthCare and the chair of this event as well as the five other physicians, Dr. Jackie Carey, Dr. Alison Bailey, Dr. Deidra Beshear, Dr. Claire Sanger and Dr. Lesley Wong who dedicated their summer Saturday to participate. I overheard comments from attendees along the lines of "this is simply an outstanding event."
I was in search of a cup of coffee in the volunteer room and uncovered a staff agenda for the day. I was totally shocked that the agenda began at 5:00 AM. A special word of appreciation goes to the UK HealthCare staff (from multiple departments at UK) who arrived at such an early hour on a Saturday morning, wearing those neon green T-shirts, to make this event so successful. Check out their photos below. As I was leaving several of the staff indicated to me their plans for the 2010 conference and how it would be bigger and better than this one.
One of my duties at UK is to monitor the developments / debate on healthcare reform at the national level. I am seeing an increased emphasis on wellness and prevention surface in most every proposal under consideration in DC. It is encouraging to realize UK HealthCare is getting a head start on this effort with such an outstanding conference. I would like to offer a final word about the title of the conference. From someone who recently celebrated his 29th wedding anniversary last week- Yes Women- it really is All About You!!!!
