Surgery
At University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, infants and children with surgical problems of the head and neck,
thorax, abdomen, perineum and soft tissues are cared for by the pediatric
surgery service. In addition, the faculty and staff are involved in the
care of many infants and children who are victims of trauma.
Currently, more than 700 operations are performed each year by the
pediatric surgery service, which consists of two attending pediatric
surgeons, as well as a fourth-year and a first-year general surgery
resident. Each of the pediatric PGY-1s spends one month in the service.
Our goal is to provide them with an appreciation of the outpatient evaluation
and pre-operative assessment of the pediatric patient, an understanding
of the principles of surgical treatment, and an awareness of the complexities
of perioperative management. This is accomplished by integrating the
pediatric resident into the activities of the service, including participation
in the twice-weekly outpatient clinic, attendance at a representative
sample of operations, and participation in daily ward rounds.
