Division of Infectious Diseases
UK Infectious Diseases
serves several hundred patients with a wide variety of infectious diseases
each
year. Patients are seen through inpatient consultations at UK
Medical Center and community hospitals throughout Lexington. Outpatient
consultations are performed in the pediatric infectious diseases clinic
and in the various other subspecialty clinics.
Patients with a variety of common and unusual viral, bacterial, fungal,
and protozoal/parasitic infections are seen.
Teaching activities of the division are centered on the interaction
of the infectious disease faculty with the house staff and medical students
during inpatient and outpatient consultations, didactic lectures, and
informal slide presentations. A one-month elective is available to both
senior medical students and house staff. During this time, the trainee
becomes familiar with a variety of common and uncommon infections; the
antimicrobial therapy for known conditions; the signs, symptoms, and
diagnostic approach to a child with an immunodeficiency disorder; and
the proper utilization of the diagnostic bacteriology, mycology, virology,
and serology laboratories. Numerous textbooks and selected reprints
are available for study.
