A word from Dr. Tim Bricker,
Chairman of Pediatrics
The Kentucky Children's Hospital is the only facility in central and Eastern Kentucky dedicated to the expert medical and surgical care of infants, children and adolescents. The University of Kentucky has a proud and distinguished history of providing comprehensive programs and innovative care to the children of the region. There has been a long tradition of and a profound commitment to outstanding pediatric residency training at UK.
The Department of Pediatrics provided service and education from the opening of UK College of Medicine in 1961. There was progressive growth of the status and reputation of UK Pediatrics under the leadership of Jack Githens, Warren Wheeler, Jacqueline Noonan, Vipul Mankad and Heinrich Werner. A state-of-the-art Children's Hospital facility opened in 1997. We are now in the process of a comprehensive building program which will provide for totally new pediatric and neonatal intensive care facilities, new housestaff support areas, updated research laboratories, and a separate women's and children's building on our campus.
The approach at the Kentucky Children's Hospital is focused on family-centered care. Full-time child life coverage, facilities for families to stay with children overnight, age-appropriate playrooms, children's library facilities, in-hospital school services, a dedicated television channel, a computer laboratory and many other features provide the special environment to provide the best of care for children. Specialty care includes medical and surgical cardiac care, endocrinology, pediatric kidney disease, developmental pediatrics, behavioral pediatrics, intensive care pediatrics, neonatology, gastroenterology and hepatology, dysmorphology, biochemical genetics, pediatric rheumatology, oncology, hematology, infectious diseases, hospitalist care, adolescent medicine, adolescent gynecology, child neurology, pediatric surgery, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric imaging, child psychiatry, pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric otorhinolaryngology, speech disorders, pediatric physical medicine, pediatric neurosurgery and many other fields.The growth of our clinical programs and service capability has been matched by considerable growth in pediatric research at UK. Substantial programs in vascular biology and diabetes, pediatric inflammatory biology, molecular pediatrics, developmental biology, pediatric health policy research, epidemiology, prevention, cancer research and pediatric pharmacology are growing rapidly.
The Kentucky Children's Hospital is located on the UK campus. Access to faculty in the other colleges including social sciences and humanities enhances the Kentucky Children's Hospital scholarly environment and provides unique opportunities for pediatric faculty and trainees.
The emphasis upon teaching is palpable at the Kentucky Children's Hospital. A high percentage of UK medical students are attracted into the field of pediatrics. Many leading pediatricians in the region are UK residency graduates, and our trainees are highly regarded as candidates for further training by fellowship training programs. The 3-year pediatrics residency, 4-year combined medicine-pediatrics residency and the 5-year psychiatry-child psychiatry-pediatrics residency are all highly regarded. The close relationships between these groups of trainees provides a unique and highly productive learning environment. Advanced training opportunities are available in child neurology, neonatology, and pediatric research.
We remain committed to improving the lives and health of the children of the Commonwealth and improving the future for their families. Our clinical care, educational programs and research initiatives all reflect our commitment. It is exciting for us to meet candidates for residency training who might benefit from the opportunities offered at UK and the Kentucky Children's Hospital.
