Taking Steps to Raise Awareness of Mental Health Issues

On Oct. 8, the Lexington chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) hosted the annual NAMI Walk to support education, outreach, support and advocacy for mental illness. UK HealthCare was proud to be a sponsor of this event which welcomed participants from across the Commonwealth for this 5K at Masterson Station Park.

The National Institute of Mental Health indicates that approximately one in four adults suffer from a mental illness in a given year. With this statistic, chances are that you or someone you know has been directly affected by mental illness. With an event such as NAMI Walk, hopefully the stigmas surrounding mental illness will be erased, one step at a time.

Unfortunately, I was out of town on the day of this year's NAMI Walk and was unable to attend.  The UK Department of Psychiatry had a team again this year. This was the first time that I have missed the NAMI Walk in several years.  In addition to raising money for mental health programs and services, the NAMI Walk goes a long way toward increasing awareness of the prevalence of mental health issues in this state.  I am confident that those who participated benefited from their experience.
