Welcome College of Medicine Class of 2014

Last Friday, August 6, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine welcomed the new class of 2014 with the traditional white coat ceremony. Dr. Emery Wilson, Interim Dean and VP for clinical academic affairs, gave the welcome and keynote address. As usual he had the entire place laughing at his remarks and listening intently to the serious side of his address. From his comments on the past and present to the future he undoubtedly created a lasting impression with the students.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the College of Medicine, so as you will notice in the pictures below there are quite a few white coats on stage. Participating in the presentation of the white coats and humanism pins were alumni representatives from the past 50 years. It was great to see so many people participating in such a monumental academic moment for these incoming students. And it was great to see that my good friend was there, Dr. Don Neel class of 1964, representing the first class of the college of medicine.

A few facts about the class of 2014 that you may find interesting:

  • They achieved the highest MCAT average recorded on this version of the MCAT at the UK College of Medicine
  • 88 of 113 are Kentuckians, 45 are from rural and Appalachian counties
  • 12 were born outside of the US
  • 43 percent are women

This is an exciting time for the college of medicine as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary. I encourage you to visit their website to learn more and sign up for the signature event. http://www.mc.uky.edu/medicine50/index.html
