Safety Net Hospital Pharmacy Access Board Meets in Washington

The board of directors for the Safety Net Hospitals for Pharmaceutical Access (SNHPA) met last weekend in Washington, DC. The weather was great in DC, despite the late July heatwave!

The SNHPA board meeting was held with the annual meeting of the 340B coalition for pharmaceutical pricing. Section 340B is the section of federal legislation that authorizes hospitals and other community based providers to obtain drugs at a discount in order to enhance access to medications for low income and uninsured individuals. Obviously the health care reform legislation passed by Congress will impact this program for the years to come.

Last year I was elected to serve on the board of directors of the SNHPA, holding an at large post for hospital executives. See previous post:  http://ukhcforums.uky.edu/forums/blogs/ukhc_external_affairs/archive/2009/07/13/results-are-in.aspx   At this year's annual meeting I was elected as Chair Elect of the Board, which means that I will be very active in the leadership for the next several years. I had the opportunity to address this large group of hospital leaders in my new capacity on the Board. Working with this group is yet another great opportunity for UK HealthCare representation to be active on policy activities at the national level.

Check out the pictures below from this series of meetings. I included a picture of the gardens at the Omni Shoreham hotel to show the beautiful scenery outside the board room. It was indeed hard to pay attention during the meeting with such a distraction!
