Dr. Carol Steltenkamp is more than just a face on the Government Health Information Technology magazine outside of my office. She is a longstanding clinical leader in health information technology in Kentucky and speaks nationally on future of health information exchange on the national level.

This week she has received a new national honor. HIMSS, Health Information and Management Systems Society, is a national health information technology organization. They have asked Dr. Steltenkamp, UK’s chief medical information officer, to be a member of the board.

HIMSS has 23,000 individual members. According to their website the group works to lead public policy through education, professional development and advocacy initiatives. HIMSS holds conferences and exhibitions throughout the year to educate physicians, nurses and practice staff about health IT.

Dr. Steltenkamp will participate as a member of the board for three years.

Dr. Steltenkamp is also chair of the Kentucky Regional Extension Center (REC). The REC is reaching out to Kentucky’s primary care providers to assist them in implementing Electronic Medical Records and bringing them up to federal standards.  She is the principle investigator of the grant that is funding the newly forming REC.
