Mr. Roger Springate, UK HealthCare's Fayette County "Hero of the Year" nomination.

The Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross is such a vital organization to Fayette County and even surrounding counties.  I am always amazed at the work that the Red Cross does internationally and locally. Many of you know the work that this organization has done on an international scale after the disaster in Haiti. But what you may not realize is all the help they provide here in our own neighborhood. Locally they provide relief to the victims of more than 200 disasters each year, provide more than 1,800 individual services to our military service men and women and their families, and train nearly 12,000 people in lifesaving skills. For more about the American Red Cross please visit

They have started a fundraising campaign that allows communities to recognize a local "hero." In order to nominate a Fayette county hero, individuals or organizations must donate or raise a minimum of $1000. As part of our UK HealthCare sponsorship we have the opportunity to nominate an individual. You can imagine the challenge of nominating someone from the hospital with all of our employees who give their time each and every day.  In addition we have numerous  volunteers who continue to impact our patients and families. After discussing with our director of volunteer services, Bonnie Thornton, she and others volunteered Mr. Roger Springate.

I thought it would be great to share with my readers what was said about Mr. Springate and how we are lucky to have someone like him volunteering for the hospital and making such a positive impact on the lives of our patients and their families and employees.

Roger is very deserving of the American Red Cross "Hero of the Year" award. He has battled cancer and gone through many hardships along the way while continuing to go above and beyond his duty to comfort patients and families during their time of need. He is a wonderful asset to the volunteer team at the UK Hospital- empathy and compassion are simply two qualities that come to mind when thinking of this individual.

It is always a very stressful time for families when loved ones are having surgery or upon arrival get lost at the Clinic or Hospital. Roger spends countless hours volunteering to make sure families not only know where they are going, but he provides comfort and information for them while waiting for their loved one to come out of surgery. He personally accompanies families or individuals to the recovery room to alleviate any confusion as to the location of their family member. He is always willing to stay late for family members if needed. The comfort he provides only family members could truly understand- from warm blankets in a chilly waiting room to providing wheelchair transportation. He logs numerous miles in daily and has truly made a difference in the lives of not only patients and families, but co-workers as well.
