UK Team Places Second in National Competition
Ayodele Osasona, Shoshana Bardach, David Bardach
Each month I get to learn about the cool events and great things
happening at the health related colleges through our External Affairs
Collaborating Council. Each month we meet to discuss sponsorships, ways
to work together, opportunities for public relations and more. It never
fails that each college always has a great story to share. This week
Nick Basham with the College of Health Sciences shared the Clarion
competition, and the story of the award-winning team. I was very
impressed and wanted to share their story of "Improving Patient
Safety." I have always managed using the team approach, so it is great
to see this worked into the curriculum.
The 2010 team that represented the University of Kentucky at the
national interprofessional Clarion Competition was comprised of Ayodele
Osasona, Shoshana Bardach, and David Bardach. Participants from top
universities across the nation take part in this two-day, highly
competitive competition held at the University of Minnesota.
The Clarion competition is designed to "demonstrate the collective
knowledge of the team" by utilizing each student's particular health
discipline-related perspective. Teams included students from the
Colleges of Dentistry, Health Sciences, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, and
Public Health. The competition focused on enabling the student
representatives to achieve a 360-degree perspective on how to improve
patient safety. Each team was given a hypothetical clinical case
scenario in which the health system had failed, and was asked to
complete a root cause analysis.
UK has competed in the Clarion Competition for the past three years, and this year was their year- 2nd
place in the nation! Their outstanding presentation bring us
recognition on the national level for the success of incorporating a
"team approach to care" into the curriculum.
The 2010 Clarion team will be presenting their award-winning presentation at noon on April 27th in the UK Chandler Hospital. Please see the link to the invitation below.
Again, congratulations to the 2010 Clarion Team!!
