Coach Calipari Supports "National Start! Walking Day"
UK HealthCare along with Urban Active and the American Heart Association took the treadmills to the streets Wednesday, April 7th, to promote the Heart Association's "National Start! Walking Day." Local celebs, such as Royce Pulliam, CEO of Urban Active, and our very own Coach Calipari, came and supported the event by hopping on the treadmills themselves. Kentucky has the 5th highest rate of heart disease, which has become the number one cause of death in our state. The event's purpose was to raise awareness to the benefits of walking to build heart health. Exercising for as little as 30 minutes each day can significantly reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke.
The walk was kicked off by my good friend Luther Deaton, who is chairing this year's walk. I can't believe how quickly the days have passed since we announced this on my blog a few months ago: http://ukhcforums.uky.edu/forums/blogs/ukhc_external_affairs/archive/2009/11/02/uk-amp-heart-association-to-lexington-start-walking.aspx
The Start! Campaign is all about taking simple steps to fight heart disease. UK HealthCare encourages you to bring your sneakers to work and get moving by walking during your lunch break. It is a simple, easy way to become active and heart healthy.
The event was a huge success, catching the attention of TopsinLex.com, WTVQ, and WKYT!
