  • Be an observer at UK HealthCare

observerUK HealthCare receives frequent requests from students and professionals seeking opportunities to observe/shadow doctors, nurses, therapists, technicians and other health care providers as they care for patients or perform their day-to-day duties within our hospital. In support of our commitment to career development, education and training of health care professionals, we provide individuals with observation experiences in various clinical areas and business professional departments.

In order to participate in the program, observers must:

    • Secure a sponsor – a current UK HealthCare employee who has made arrangements for the observation and who will accompany the observer at all times during the visit.
    • Be at least 16 years of age or an individual who is at least 14 years of age and is affiliated with an education program approved by the Office of Observation and Learning Experience for observation experiences. Observation experiences within the Operating Rooms and Emergency Department are restricted to individuals age 16 and above.
    • Complete all requirements as outlined by the Office of Observation and Learning Experience.

This educational experience is for observation only; no hands-on contact is permitted with any patient.

    Important information for observers

Many rules and regulations must be followed to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and hospital accreditation standards as well as ensure the safety of observers, staff and patients.

    1.  Per UK HealthCare policy, all required documents must be submitted to the Office of Observation and Learning Experience at least two weeks prior to your anticipated observation start date. We highly recommend that required documents are submitted as one packet. Partial applications could result in the delay of approval.

    2.  Per UK HealthCare policy, observers shall not begin their observation until all paperwork has been submitted and approved by the Office of Observation and Learning Experience.

    3.  Per UK HealthCare policy, the rotation for the observer or person shadowing shall not exceed six (6) months in duration unless approved by the Office of Observation and Learning Experience to meet course requirements.

     4.  If you would like to be considered for an educational or observational experience, please contact the Office of Observation and Learning Experience for a complete list of instructions and required documents. You may contact us at observers@uky.edu or at 859-218-5792 or 859-218-5793. Our office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.
