LEXINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 17, 2008) - UK HealthCare is now offering a new medical specialty: pediatric otolaryngology. It focuses on care of children from birth through adolescence with all problems regarding the ear, nose and throat.
Pediatric otolaryngologists treat many common problems such as sinus, throat and ear infections and perform common procedures such as tonsillectomy tube placement in healthy as well as ill children; but they also specialize in complex problems that occasionally occur in children such as airway problems, foreign bodies, tumors, neck infections and congenital abnormalities.
Two new specialists will see children with ear, nose and throat problems. Dr. Maria Veling is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and was on staff at UofL for nine years before coming to UK. In addition to general pediatric otolaryngology, Veling has a particular interest in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and pediatric allergies.
Dr. Abbas Younes is a graduate of the American University of Beirut and completed pediatric otolaryngology fellowships in Cleveland and Detroit before coming to UK. Both Drs. Veling and Younes will hold a joint appointment in pediatrics and surgery.
The UK HealthCare Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic is located on the 3rd floor of the Kentucky Clinic in B317 and is open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For clinic appointments, call 859-257-5405.
