LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2008) - Fall fashions, delicious food and a silent auction will all be featured at 'Smiles for Life,' a fundraising event sponsored by the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) at the University of Kentucky's College of Dentistry to benefit women and children in the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program. The event will be held from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 20 in the UK Student Center Grand Ballroom.
Fourth year dental student and AAWD president Megan Finkbine said that UK dental students will be providing dental treatment for oral conditions that range from oral trauma to neglect. Comprehensive care will also be provided for these patients which includes everything from cleanings and filling to dentures. The children reached will be incorporated into the college's free Saturday Morning Clinics or the pediatric night clinic.
The festivities will begin with a brunch and silent auction. Food will be provided by Stanley J's Deli, Great Harvest, Honey Baked Ham, Magee's Bakery, Sunrise Bakery, Good Faith Catering, Mondelli's Bakery, Krispy Kreme, and Azul. Auction items will include a Keeneland print, gift baskets, fine art, spa packages, fine dining, jewelry and more. The fashion show will feature the latest looks from Bella Rose, Express, Ann Taylor and Talbot's.
The Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program is an advocacy agency committed to ending intimate partner abuse and its impact on families and our community. Executive director Darlene Thomas said that dental care is one of the most neglected forms of health care for women and children in abusive situations. Dental health in general may be poor because of high cost and lack of insurance but also, reconstructive and repair work is often needed because of the violence itself.
"The fundraiser will be a fun way to bring the community together and raise awareness and money to help make a difference in people's lives," Thomas said. "For the women and children, the ability to smile makes a big difference."
In addition to raising funds for the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program, the AAWD at UK will be collecting items to donate to the Chrysalis House and the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center, two organizations that also support women and children in crisis. Needed items include: clothing, household items, baby items (such as diapers, wipes and formula) and cell phones. New clothing like sweat pants, sweat shirts and flip flops for victims to wear home from the hospital is also being sought.
Items will be collected Saturday morning at the event. For more information, contact Megan Finkbine at email@example.com or call 828-243-4337.
