LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 14, 2007) − Beginning Monday, Nov. 19, UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital visitors and patients will park in the hospital's newly constructed parking garage. Located on S. Limestone between Conn Terrace and Transcript Avenue, the new garage will replace the current parking structure, which will be removed to provide space for a new 1.2 million-square-foot UK Chandler Hospital.
Initially, parkers will enter and exit the new garage from Transcript Avenue. Shuttle service from the new garage will reduce walking time for visitors, providing "door to door" service to UK Chandler Hospital and Kentucky Clinic. Shuttles will depart from the ground level of the new garage every three minutes, with one route taking parkers to the hospital front loop and emergency department and another route serving Kentucky Clinic. An ambassador will be stationed in the parking garage from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week to answer questions and help guests access the shuttles, which are wheelchair accessible.
The garage's basement, first and second levels will open initially. The remaining floors will open in March 2008. When the garage is completed, parkers will enter from Transcript Avenue and exit onto Conn Terrace. Ultimately, the garage will offer about 1,600 parking spaces, more than double the size of the current parking garage. Upon completion of the new UK Chandler Hospital, pedestrians will access the hospital from the garage via a walkway above Limestone. Shuttles, similar to golf carts, will be available via the walkway as well. The former hospital parking garage will close permanently Monday, Nov. 19.
The new UK Chandler Hospital, scheduled to open in 2011, will allow for step-by-step replacement of the existing hospital. It will provide state-of-the-art space for advanced subspecialty care and a warm, comfortable environment for patients and their families.
