Sports Medicine Partners with Local Practice

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 26, 2008) − The UK HealthCare Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine has announced that Dr. Mary Ireland, one of the country's top sports medicine specialists, has chosen to join the department.

Ireland and her associate, Dr. Robert T. Grant, will become part of UK HealthCare March 3.Their practice at 601 Perimeter Drive will be called UK HealthCare Sports Medicine.

"We are extremely pleased with Drs. Ireland's and Grant's decision to join our department," said Dr. Darren Johnson, UK's chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. "Drs. Ireland and Grant have provided outstanding orthopaedic/sports medicine care in the community for many, many years. They are both outstanding physicians who will further our department's ability to provide the highest level of quality care to, not only patients within Fayette County, but the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky. Our entire department welcomes them to UK HealthCare."

Ireland, a former world-ranked swimmer, has been extremely active in the region, serving as team physician for Eastern Kentucky University from 1988 to January 2006. She held the same title at UK from 1985 to 1996, served as medical coordinator and head physician for the Bluegrass State Games from 1985 to 1996, and provided medical supervision abroad for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

"They are outstanding sports medicine physicians who complement our already outstanding group of orthopaedic surgeons. We truly have a nationally recognized program in sports medicine and orthopaedics that serves our community and Kentucky extremely well."
