LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 15, 2009) - University of Kentucky assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery Dr. Todd Milbrandt presented a paper at the recent Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) meeting in Boston. The paper, "Chondrogenic Growth Factor Releasing Scaffolds for Regeneration of Growth Plates," was one of four papers nominated for best basic science presentation.
Milbrandt's investigation uses novel polymers and growth factors to recreate a growth plate in bones. The work has been a collaborative effort between Milbrandt, Dr. David Puleo from biomedical engineering, and Dr. J. Zach Hilt in the department of chemical and materials engineering.
"The paper is an example of the power of collaboration between clinicians and scientists," said Milbrandt. "This collaboration addresses a significant clinical problem with the tools found in the laboratory. I am very excited about the future implications of this project in the care of our patients."
Milbrandt was also named to the national board of POSNA as he was selected to serve as the junior board member at-large. He has been heavily involved in this society, most recently as the director of its Web site.
"I am honored to serve on the national board for POSNA," said Milbrandt. "The board serves to decide, both in the short term and and long term, the future of the society. I am thrilled to be asked to serve to help guide those decisions."
Milbrandt, Dr. Henry Iwinski, Dr. Vishwas Talwalkar, and Dr. Janet Walker, of the UK Department of Orthopeadics and Shriners Hospital, presented a total of seven papers at the POSNA meeting. They included topics such as radiographic measurements of the lower limbs in kids, pediatric obesity after surgery, manipulation of angular deformities in children, and the three-dimensional imaging of the pediatric hip in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease.
