LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 25, 2008) A special quilt will be on display August 26, 2008 at UK Chandler Hospital. A Donor Family Memorial Quilt is traveling to every hospital in the state in an effort to share information about organ/tissue donation and the new Kentucky Donor Registry. One of four quilts will be on display in the hospital lobby from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 26th. The quilt memorializes those who offered the gift of life to others through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The quilt is comprised of approximately 38 squares, each made by a family in honor of their loved one who passed away and became an organ or tissue donor.
Currently, there are more than 100,000 people in the United States on the waiting list for a life saving organ transplant. Of those people, more than 650 live in Kentucky. During Tuesday's quilt event, a member of the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates will be available to answer questions about organ donation and the new Kentucky registry.
The UK HealthCare Transplant Center recently performed its 3,000th organ transplant. This milestone is a sign of the continued growth of the transplant program, which has been providing transplantation services since 1964.
