LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 11, 2008) - Mark D. Birdwhistell has been appointed UK HealthCare Chief External Affairs Officer.
Mark brings over 30 years of health care experience at both the state and national levels," said Dr. Michael Karpf, University of Kentucky executive vice president of health affairs. "This experience will be instrumental in his new role. He will continue to build on the UK HealthCare brand to bring forth new opportunities to ensure that our prior successes and our future directions are communicated throughout the state."
In this role, Birdwhistell will oversee the coordination of activities and communication with external parties and with the campus community. He will be charged with developing a strategy to provide a unified and consistent UK HealthCare message to the community, government officials, health care payors and clinical partners.
Birdwhistell will serve as chair of a soon to be appointed External Affairs Collaboration Council (EACC), which will provide a platform for an enterprise-wide focus for all UK HealthCare external relations activities.
Birdwhistell has been with UK HealthCare since 1994. In late 2007 he returned to UK after having served as the Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family services for the state of Kentucky. During his tenure as secretary, he received state and national recognition for his role in reforming Kentucky's health and human services programs. Prior to that, Birdwhistell served as the chief executive officer for CHA Health, overseeing the health plan's successful return to financial solvency.
Birdwhistell is a graduate of the UK Martin School of Public Administration and Georgetown College. He resides in Lawrenceburg with his wife Martha.
