Established in 1985, Markey Cancer Center utilizes the resources of 28 departments, eight colleges and 150 faculty members throughout UK to further the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer.
Markey Cancer Center Web site >
The Markey Cancer Center is physically located at the north central end of the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. The Center is integrated within the UK Hospital for patient care services and within the UK College of Medicine for academic/education, research and service programs. The Center encompasses four individual facilities containing a total of approximately 200,000 square feet of space, although its programs reach well beyond the University of Kentucky campus, extending throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky and across twelve states of Appalachia and the Mid-South. The physical facilities of the Center include the following:
Ben F. Roach Cancer Care Facility
The Ben F. Roach Cancer Care Facility of the Markey Cancer Center provides 48,000 square feet of space dedicated to the individualized care of cancer patients. This facility houses 56 private inpatient rooms with satellite bases for all primary services. Six rooms of the second floor are lead lined to isolate short term inpatient radioactive iodine treatments and patients requiring long term radiation implants. Sixteen specialized rooms on the third floor provide a dedicated blood and marrow transplant unit.
A linear accelerator and brachytherapy unit are located in the basement of the Ben F. Roach Building of the cancer center and a GAMMA Knife irradiation facility is located in the underground corridor connector between the Roach Building and the UK Hospital.
What's inside: Patient care and cancer treatment facilities
Programs/Uses: Inpatient and outpatient cancer care services, administrative office, radiation medicine, ovarian cancer screening, bone marrow transplant, and cancer-related research labs
Location: The Ben F. Roach Cancer Center is located adjacent to UK Hospital on Rose Street, and a small parking lot and drop-off circle are accessible next to the building.
Features: This triangular setting is used successfully to meet the needs of various cancer-related programs. It is one of three facilities that encompass the Markey Cancer Center. The other two are the Davis-Mills Magnetic Resonance Imaging Spectroscopy Center and the Combs Research Building.
Dorothy Enslow Combs Cancer Research Facility
The Dorothy Enslow Combs Cancer Research Building provides 29,500 square feet of state of the art laboratory, office and conference space and includes three core facilities: Macromolecular Structure Analysis, NMR Spectroscopy, and Transgenic and Genetically Defined Mouse facilities.
What's inside: 25 primary research laboratories dedicated to cancer research, including core facilities for high field NMR, DNA sequencing, protein sequencing, peptide synthesis and oligonucleotide synthesis
Location: The building is located directly behind the Markey Cancer Center on the north side of UK Hospital on Rose Street.
Features: The typical research lab module is about 300 square feet excluding office space.
M. Margrite Davis and Ralph E. Mills Magnetic Imaging and Spectroscopy Center
The Margrite Davis and Ralph Mills Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Center houses instrumentation, research laboratories and support services for molecular, cellular, animal and human spectroscopic imaging, aiding the study of disease processes and evaluation of responses to treatment. The office tower of the MRISC Building is integrated with the Cancer Facility for Women and provides clinical evaluation space and chemotherapy / infusion services, plus the headquarters for the Women's Health Initiative.
What's inside: MRI patient services
Programs/Uses: The MRISC is an interdisciplinary center that promotes basic, applied, and clinical research in the biomedical sciences along with patient care in magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy.
Location: The MRISC adjoins the new Women's' Cancer Facility and is one of the three buildings that make up the Markey Cancer Center, which is located on Rose Street next to UK Hospital. A small parking lot and drop-off circle for patients is located off Rose Street on the north side of Markey Cancer Center.
Features: Along with the MRI and spectroscopy equipment for patient care, about 30,000 square feet of space is devoted to research and development of biomedical applications in magnetic resonance.
Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson Cancer Facility for Women
The Cancer Facility provides a focus for multidisciplinary ambulatory care for major cancers affecting women, including: gynecologic cancers (third floor), breast cancer (second floor), and lung, hematologic, gastrointestinal and urologic cancers (first floor). The combined Cancer Facility for Women and MRISC tower constitute a composite Ambulatory Care Pavilion addressing the majority of outpatient needs for cancer care services.
