Rebecca Yarrison, PhD, serves as Assistant Professor in the Program for Bioethics with appointments in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and in the College of Nursing. She is responsible for clinical ethics consultation, pediatric ethics initiatives and nursing ethics initiatives.
Dr. Yarrison graduated with distinction and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in Philosophy. She did her graduate work at Rice University and earned her PhD in philosophy having completed the Biomedical Ethics Program that is a joint program between Rice and Baylor College of Medicine. She also received a graduate certificate in the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality from Rice. Before coming to UK, Dr. Yarrison was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Baylor College of Medicine, where she co-coordinated the Ethics Program at the Methodist Hospital, Texas Medical Center, and was responsible for aspects of both graduate and undergraduate medical ethics education. Dr. Yarrison has also served on several hospital ethics committees and on an institutional review board.
Dr. Yarrison’s primary interest is clinical ethics consultation, and her current research interests include decision-making for pediatric patients, treatment contracts and allocation of scarce medical resources. She has given presentations on a variety of topics including communicating about end-of-life issues, code status, disorders of consciousness, brain death, donation after cardiac death and medical decision-making.
