University Health Service: Covered Services for Students 

Services Provided to Students by the Health Fee:

• Unlimited visits with the medical staff for illness or injury.
• Women’s care (gynecology) services (appointments for routine annual exams should be made at least two weeks in advance).
• Well-patient physical examinations needed to complete required forms for outside agencies.
• Some medications prescribed by University Health Service clinicians for acute illness, e.g., decongestants, cough medicines, antacids and some antibiotics.
• Observation beds are available for students who need short-term medical observation. Overnight care is not provided.
• Allergy injections can be administered by UHS nursing staff. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Antigens must be brought to UHS by the student along with written instructions from the allergist. Instructions must include the dosage schedule, an identifying label that includes the patient’s name and vial number, and the physician’s name and address. Any changes in the dosage schedule requires written authorization from the allergist.
• Tuberculin (TB) Skin Testing administration and serum giving and/or evaluation of the TB questionnaire.
• Immunizations students may receive the MMR, Tdap, Pertussis, Hepatitis B series, HPV and/or the Meningitis vaccine, but must pay for the cost of the vaccine.
• Behavioral Health appointments may be made by calling 859-323-5511. The professionals in the Behavioral Health Service have experience in dealing with a wide range of concerns. Drug and alcohol abuse counseling is also available. All discussions are confidential. Spouses are not eligible for this service.
• Health and Wellness classes on sexual health are available and are recommended for women who wish to begin using prescription contraceptives. Counseling on nutritional concerns such as weight control, eating disorders, diabetes and sports nutrition is available by appointment. Tobacco cessation is also available for students.
• Public health activities are carried out by UHS staff for both routine and emergency public health functions for the campus.
• An on-call Health Service physician is available for telephone consultation for urgent situations at all hours when the UHS is closed. 859-323-5321

Other services provided or available on a fee-for-service basis (Not covered by health fee):

• Accident/injury care requiring a minor surgical procedure. Example: suturing of laceration; casting of a simple fracture.
• Outpatient surgery. Example: incision and drainage of an abscess; biopsy.
• Colposcopy.
• Cost of some laboratory tests.
• Cost of oral contraceptives.
• Cost of some prescriptions.
• Cost of immunization vaccines.
• Dental Care.
  • Oral health care can be obtained from the UK College of Dentistry. For
    information call 859-323-9707. After hours call the UK Hospital at 859-323-5321 and ask for the on-call dentist.
   

Services not provided at UHS:

• Diagnostic X-rays and tests including contrast studies, MRI’s, and CAT scans.
• Cost for most lab testing.
• Cost for referrals to outside consultants/specialists.
• Prenatal and obstetrical care.
• Skin tests for allergies.
• Refraction for glasses or contacts.
• Hospitalization and related expenses.
  • All hospital charges are billed to the student or his/her insurance carrier. Students who have been hospitalized may return to the Health Service for follow-up care.
   

• After hours care.
  • A University Health Service clinician takes calls from home for urgent situations. The physician is available for telephone consultation only and cannot make appointments. This physician can be contacted by calling the Medical Center paging operator at 859-323-5321 and asking for the on-call physician for student health. During the hours UHS is not open, a student can go to an urgent treatment center, UK Chandler Hospital or UK Good Samaritan Emergency Department, or the appropriate emergency facility for their location. However, students are financially responsible for medical care received outside UHS . No referral from UHS is needed.
