Samaritan Hospital Pain Care
Center was established because of the enormous need for a
specialized provider of medical services to individuals who
suffer severe, disabling pain. The Center offers innovative
therapies to individuals suffering from syndromes of severe
back pain, headaches, chronic joint pain, pain caused by malignancies,
neuropathic pain and other pain-related conditions. Patients
are seen on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

The Pain Care Center staff will approach your case individually
and objectively. This means the true causes of your pain will
be identified and a treatment program will be tailored especially
for you. The treatment is geared toward restoring your lifestyle
that has been devastated by pain. This includes increasing your
functional capabilities and eliminating any drug dependency.

Our staff works as a team to care for you
and they are specifically trained and dedicated to treating
individuals who suffer from pain. They are specialists with
reputations for high quality pain diagnosis, research and
management. This dedicated team ensures that you will receive
the highest quality pain care services available.
Diagnosis
The first step in your care at the Center is the physician's
evaluation of your pain condition. This initial evaluation is
very thorough, in order to determine the true causes of your
pain.
Treatment
Second, a program of treatment is established. The treatment
is directed at relieving your pain and increasing your ability
to work and carry out a normal lifestyle. The Pain Care Center
uses a variety of methods to accomplish these goals. Some examples
of these methods are:
Physical
Therapy
Exercise programs to relieve pain and increase physical strength
and endurance.
Nerve
Blocks
Injections to stop the nerve impulses that cause you to feel
pain.
Surgery
Corrective procedure to eliminate or improve the physical
condition causing pain.
Medications
Non-narcotics used to relieve pain during the healing period
or on a long-term basis.
Counseling
services
Psychological and/or vocational counseling, biofeedback, family
and individual counseling and instruction in coping methods
all assist you in dealing with your pain.
Other treatment methods are available, whether
you are disabled by back pain, headaches, cancer or other
painful conditions. The pain Care Center has the resources
to provide you the highest quality pain care services available.
Access to the Pain Care
Center
Your pain condition should first be brought to the attention
of your regular family physician. Your physician can then determine
if you should be referred to the Pain Care Center.
For Your First Visit, Please
Bring:

Any x-rays, MRI, CT or myelogram
films relating to your pain condition. Your referring physician's
office should be able to assist you in obtaining these films
and records.

A list of all medications
you are currently taking, including the name, dosages (number
of pills taken per day), milligrams and how long a period
you have been taking the medications. Bringing the actual
bottles of medication would be helpful.

A list of medications you
have taken in the past, including name, dosages (number
of pills taken per day), milligrams, how long a period you
took the medication, its effectiveness and why you stopped
taking it. Also, any allergic reactions you may have had
are important to note.

A referring letter and all
consult notes from your attending physician need to be mailed
to the Pain Care Center office prior to your initial visit.
Appointment
The Pain Care Center physicians must work by appointment only.
This gives the staff an opportunity to allocate enough time
to each individual patient, thus maximizing treatment. A sincere
attempt is made to adhere to schedule.
If you cannot keep a scheduled appointment, please notify our
offices as soon as possible. This courtesy makes it possible
for another who needs care to be seen.

Location
The Pain Care Center is located in Samaritan Hospital, which
is on the corner of South Limestone and Maxwell Street. Please
enter the hospital through the Main Entrance on the Ground Floor
and register in the Admitting Office. You will then be given
instructions on how to get to the Pain Care Center on the Fourth
Floor of the hospital.
Who Pays?
The Pain Care Center has professionals on staff who specializes
in pre-authorizing payment for services prior to your appointment.
We work closely with worker's compensation carriers, private
insurance carriers, Medicare / Medicaid and some HMO plans.
Generally, we are able to obtain the necessary payment authorization
from your insurance carrier and take that worry off your mind.
However, in the event your claim is denied you are notified
of that and someone here will work with you to make other payment
arrangements.
