Joseph A. Iocono, MD, MBA, FACS

Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery
Vice Chair of Education, General Surgery

My name is Joseph Iocono; I was born in Philadelphia and attended Boston College where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Math. I received my medical degree from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. I completed a general surgery residency and research fellowship at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa. I completed a fellowship at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Philadelphia. I have been a pediatric surgeon and member of the faculty at the University of Kentucky since 2003.

I am board certified by the American Board of Surgery with special certification in pediatric surgery. My clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, trauma and neonatal surgery. My academic interests include injury prevention, and surgery education. My family includes two daughters and two Labrador retrievers.

Personal statement

I have a profession where I have the privilege of treating people's most precious possession, their child. It's not a job. It's a true privilege to do what we do. You are truly there for patients, and the satisfaction you get doesn't come from a paycheck, it doesn't come from accolades – other than accolades from a mom or a kid who gives you a high-five in the clinic. I am blessed to work with a lot of pediatric specialists at Kentucky Children's Hospital who are here to take care of kids.
