Charles Hoopes is Jason Alexander Gill Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Section Chief, Cardiopulmonary Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support (VADs and ECMO). Hoopes is a graduate of Duke University Medical School and holds a graduate degree in anthropology from Wake Forest University. He completed his general surgical residency at Duke and his thoracic surgery training at the University of Michigan before returning to Duke as a Fellow in thoracic transplantation. 

He was an Associate Professor of Surgery and surgical director of the heart and lung transplant programs at the University of California San Francisco from 2002 to 2010. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College Chest Physicians, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
