Surgical Director, Adult and Pediatric Renal Transplantation Program and Pancreas Transplantation Program

My name Michael F. Daily; I am the Surgical Director of the Adult and Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program and the Pancreas Transplant Program. I am originally from the west, but have been at the University of Kentucky for over 4 years. I graduated from college in Montana at Carroll College. I then went to Graduate School at California State University, Northridge.

I was working for a pharmaceutical company in New Mexico when I applied to Medical School. In medical school at the University of Utah, is when I discovered an interest in Surgery, which led to Transplantation Surgery. My Transplant Surgery Fellowship was at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute in Pittsburgh. From there I took a job at the University of California, Davis. I moved to Kentucky when the opportunity became available to engage in Transplant Surgery without living in a big city.

My interests include adult and pediatric kidney transplant, pancreas transplant, live donor kidney transplant, dialysis access including peritoneal dialysis catheters, liver masses, and resections.

Personal statement

Transplant isn't like a lot of other specialties. It's not just one doctor and one patient. I've got nurses and coordinators and schedulers and a medicine team and the surgical team that work together to make this happen. We're meeting at least every week and often every day to discuss different patient issues and patient care. It truly takes a village to perform a transplant on each patient. The ability to take someone with organ failure and fix that with an operation is just fantastic. It is really the best feeling to be able to take somebody off dialysis and help them return to their normal lives.
