Terrence A. Barrett, MD

Chief, Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition

My name is Terrence Barrett; I join the UK HealthCare faculty from Northwestern Memorial Hospital where I have been on staff since 1992 and a professor in the Division of Gastroenterology since 2008. I came to Lexington in June as Chief of Gastroenterology.

After receiving my medical degree from the University of Illinois, I completed a residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. I completed fellowships in gastroenterology, IBD and immunology at the University of Chicago.

I am the recipient of numerous prestigious research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. I serve on the editorial board of numerous national and international journals and have authored more than 200 articles, abstracts, book reviews and editorials.

I specialize in complex inflammatory bowel disease and am part of a NCI clinical trial for patients with colitis-induced dysplasia.

I have expertise in chromoendoscopy and the evaluation and detection of colitis-induced dysplasia. I am one of only a few physicians, nationally, who have experience in this procedure. I am available for direct referrals for colonoscopy with chromoendoscopy in patients needing colitis surveillance.
